Today, and several times over the last few months I have been analyzing my friendships. With this analysis, I have come to realize (through the lack of verbal conversations, emails and phone exchanges) that some of my friendships are lopsided–where I consider the person more of a friend than they consider me. This is where I get my feelings hurt. Ouch.

  1. It may not be you – friendships go through different seasons for many different reasons. Having a child may change the dynamics of friendships from week to week rather than the year-to-year changes you’re probably accustomed to. Friends without children drift apart, Pregnancy/due date buddies lose their bond as the differences in milestones/experiences become wider, friends with older children seem to forget how difficult the early months are, etc. A true friendship can wax and wane over time but will ultimately last through the years. Friendships that are based on a common thread (work, location, etc) may fade over time. Think of these as opportunities to branch out and meet new people you otherwise may not have gotten to know. Check back on the people that you want to stay in touch with every once in a while. Maybe you will find a common bond yet again.I feel for you – I’ve been there so many times myself. It’s hard not to hurt.
